Architecture Refactoring Model
3 Day(s)
🎯 LEARNING OBJECTIVES
Understand architectural refactoring and its role in managing technical debt.
Identify architectural smells, excessive coupling, duplicated responsibilities, and structural weaknesses.
Plan incremental architecture improvements without changing intended external behavior.
Evaluate refactoring outcomes using automated tests and quality measures.
🧠 PREREQUISITES
Understanding of software architecture, design principles, and common design patterns.
Basic experience with software maintenance, version control, and automated testing.
Architecture Refactoring
If you do not have all mentioned documentations, you should reverse engineer the solution, which means using existing code and artifact to form what you have from:
user perspective
Developer perspective
Operation perspective
Code & Artifact Inventory
Collect all source code, configs, database schemas, deployment scripts.
Build a catalog describing what exists.
Static Analysis
Use tools (Enterprise Architect, Visual Paradigm, PlantUML, SonarQube).
Extract Class Diagrams, Component Diagrams, Package Dependencies.
Dynamic Analysis
Monitor the system at runtime (APM tools like Dynatrace, New Relic).
Derive Sequence Diagrams, State Charts from execution traces.
Database & Data Models
Generate ER Diagrams from the database.
Map them to business entities.
Infrastructure & Deployment
Reverse engineer Deployment Diagrams from Kubernetes/OpenShift manifests or server configs.
Show nodes, load balancing, and communication paths.
Use Case Extraction
From user stories, logs, or requirements, derive Use Case Diagrams.
Link them to business workflows.
Gap Analysis
Compare extracted models with business/requirements.
Identify gaps (unclear scope, missing reusability, communication issues).
Model Consolidation
Create a unified MDA repository in a modeling tool (EA, UML).
Establish traceability across diagrams.
Refactoring & Documentation
Document new UML/EA diagrams.
Suggest improvements (modularity, secure by design).
Governance Setup
Define a process: every future change must go into the model first before coding.
This gradually evolves the system into an MDA-driven approach.
in order to make reverse engineering using MDA approach, you should do follow one of the following strategies:
Horizontal
Focusing on finalizing business journey, from all models, static and dynamic models, Analysis and architecture models, So there is a collaboration between the team members within the agile SQUAD to deliver mature models.
Benefits:
Mature models will be delivered
Rework effort reduced
Vertical
Focusing on finalizing business journey, from all models, static and dynamic models, Analysis and architecture models, So there is a collaboration between the team members within the agile SQUAD to deliver mature models.
Benefits:
Immature models according to learning curve
Rework effort increased
Faster model
Focus on reverse egineering
1. Why solution is deployed this way...with focusing on: product technical requirement and non functional requirements
2. What is the solution building blocks...from w perspective...business modules..product components...reusable components...enterprise architecture
3. What is the relation between building block...and does it meet non functional req
4. Determine each building block that meet sysrwm requirements
5. Determine business solution architecture...wirh mapping to each component
